OT’s Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Travel with Kids

Holiday travel can be stressful, especially for kids who thrive on routine or have sensory sensitivities. With these tips, you can help make the journey smoother for everyone:

fidget toys

Pack a Sensory Kit

Include headphones for noise reduction, fidget toys, chewable jewelry, familiar snacks, and comfort items like a favorite stuffed animal. These tools can help kids self-regulate during long car rides or flights.

Stick to Familiar Routines

Try to maintain your child’s usual meal and sleep schedule as much as possible, even when away from home. Bring familiar items like their pillow or bedtime book to ease the transition.

Plan for Movement Breaks

Build in time for kids to move around during travel stops. Stretching, jumping jacks, or a quick game of tag can help burn off energy and reset their mood.

Prepare for Transitions

Use social stories, visual schedules, or countdowns to help kids understand what to expect at each stage of the trip.

Pack Snacks and Entertainment

Bring a variety of snacks and engaging activities like books, coloring supplies, or a new fidget toy to keep your child engaged!

With a little preparation and the right tools, holiday travel can be a more enjoyable experience for your family. These tips can help your child feel more comfortable and regulated while you make memories that will last a lifetime. Remember to be flexible and celebrate small wins during the journey—they make all the difference!
